Tip: The current ripple factor is usually set between 20%-40%, and the conversion efficiency is usually between 80%-95%.
A switching regulator turns one DC voltage into another. It uses a switch, a diode, an inductor, and a capacitor to store energy and release it. This wastes less power than a linear regulator.
You can pick buck or boost mode. In buck mode, it steps down a higher voltage. In boost mode it raises a lower voltage up. Changing mode updates the numbers and the circuit image right away.
Inside the regulator, the transistor works as the switch. The inductor holds energy when the switch is on and gives it back when it is off. The capacitor smooths the output. The diode guides the current in one direction.
For example, the MC34063 in buck mode turns 12 V into 5 V. The TPS61022 in boost mode turns 3.7 V into 5 V.
To use the tool, pick buck or boost and fill in your values. Click “Calculate” and you see all the results and a matching circuit diagram.
A switching regulator is a device that changes one DC voltage to another. It uses a transistor switch, an inductor, a a diode, and capacitor to move energy. This method cuts wasted power.
Pick “Buck” or “Boost” mode. Enter your input voltage, output voltage, switching frequency, load current, efficiency, and ripple factor. Click “Calculate.” You will see the duty cycle, inductor size, peak current, diode loss, capacitor value, input power, and output power.
Choose a buck when your input voltage is higher than the output you need. The calculator will show how to step down the voltage.
Choose boost when your input voltage is lower than the output you need. The calculator will show how to raise the voltage.
